Next, the bride’s father should transition into introducing the DJ or band, photographer, and giving any other comments on the reception.

The father of the bride’s 10 minutes in front of his guests should end with a toast to the bride and groom giving wishes for a lifetime of love and happiness.

If the father of the bride is not comfortable giving a speech in front of 100 plus friends and family at the wedding reception, suggest that he write or find a poem that expresses his heartfelt feelings. If he isn’t into searching for poems, ask the bestman or another person who knows both the father and bride well to help find several poems from which the bride’s father can choose.

Rain on your wedding day means you will be easily blessed with children. The rain didn’t dampen the reception at all. Large tents were positioned on the private beach to keep the sun off, and in this case, also the rain.

The beautiful bride wore an equally beautiful beaded ankle length wedding dress (hem longer in the back) with matching sandals. In place of a headpiece, the bride wore her hair up with a tropical flower which she also held in her bouquet.

But, what I briefly want to tell you about is the groom’s wedding attire. He was so handsome. I wish I had pictures to show you, but I left my camera at home.

The groom was dressed in a white shirt, unbuttoned at the collar with no tie, white dinner jacket, black tux pants, and black sandals. A handkerchief in the jacket’s pocket matched the aqual bridesmaids dresses. His look was very sexy.

A white dinner jacket is appropriate for weddings between Memorial Day and Labor Day and perfect for a beach or destination wedding. Remember, it’s your wedding and you can wear the style you feel the most comfortable in, be creative…enjoy your day.

How can I lose weight?

Do you need to lose weight, tone up, or both?  If you do, you need to start now and not wait until the last minute. By waiting for the last minute to lose weight too quickly and over exercise, you may become ill or injure yourself, or in some cases…both. You owe it to yourself and your spouse to be to take it slowly and consistently.

Make a Weight Loss and Exercise Plan

Whenever you begin anything new, you need to make a plan which starts with a goal. The same goes for the self-improvement, weightloss plan you are about to launch.

The American Dietetic Association makes the following recommendations:

• Write down your attainable, measurable, and realistic goal
• research good nutrition (mypyramid.gov)
• exercise: body sculpting, weight training, and aerobics

By using mypyramid.gov, you can design a weightloss plan without spending any money beyond a good pair of cross training shoes. At mypyramid.com you can learn about nutrition and how to plan your meals balancing the healthy food groups including the amount nutrients you’re taking in.  You will also receive feedback as to the benefits of your exercise plan by learning about calories burned through specific exercises.

If you research each of the popular diet plans, you’ll all see they have two things in common…eat right and exercise!  Exercise increases your metabolism rate which in turn burns the calories and fat. Without an ongoing, consistent exercise program, you won’t be able to sustain your weightloss. That is why so many people lose weight and then gain it back. They stop their effort once they reach their goal.

Remember, you didn’t get this body you have now overnight…and you won’t get your new one overnight, either.  Once you get it, keep it. Exercise!

Exercise

If you watch the exercise gurus on TV, you hear them all stress working on the “core” which is the center of your torso. Working your core gives you that toned, flat front that enables us to be able to wear just about any style we want!  The core keeps your spine and body straight, preventing back injuries and giving you that “inner” strength to work the other muscles. Work the lower abs, then the middle abs, and ending with the upper abs because the upper abs fatique quicker than the lower ones.

The internet is loaded with free exercises for all parts of the body and if you can’t find them, there are books and plenty of videos to follow.  The trend for some brides and grooms are to hire a trainer at a local gym or spa.

Beginning a healthy lifestyle with your new spouse to be before the wedding is a great way to bond even closer. It is something you can do without cost by hiking or jogging through the parks or along the boardwalk where it is usually cooler. Biking on scenic routes can be an enjoyable pastime, too. Make it a day, go exploring, combine your choices of aerobic exercise. Take tennis lessons together or ballroom dancing to get ready for your first dance.

Don’t get fooled by all those who want to sell you their plan and take your money. You can do it on your own. But for some of us, we need someone to help us get started, for the structure, and help with the discipline. By having someone to answer to each week, it may keep you on target.

Here are some tips to help you reach your goal:

• keep a recent picture of yourself and a picture of what you want to look like, preferably a wedding couple
• keep a weightloss chart there, too
• keep a magnetic pad on the fridge and write down everything you eat and drink (it’s easy to forget)
• keep a small journal with you and jot down all food, beverage, and exercise
• plan and keep to an exercise schedule for you and your partner

You must have visual reminders and feedback to keep you conscious of your goal and the desired outcome.

After your wedding, make a pact to keep it up so you can be healthy through all your many years together.

Here are three pieces of advice to follow for shopping for the Mother of the Groom’s dress:

1. Check with the Mother of the Bride and Bride for style and colors.
2. Ask the bride to go with you. She will have seen her mother’s dress and the shopping will give the two of you a chance to get closer.
3. Choose a color and style flattering to you but not clashing with the bridesmaids dresses because you have the right to look beautiful, too.

I’m excited to be part of this very meaningful occasion in our son’s life, but, you see…I need to lose about 20 pounds and many inches for the look I want for myself in those wedding photos which last over many lifetimes! I was thin in my wedding photos, and not too bad in our daughter’s wedding photos…I just don’t want to look worse in our son’s wedding photos…especially since I’m 10 years older than when we celebrated our daughter’s wedding. 

It’s not really vanity, it’s just feeling good about myself. Even when I lose just a few pounds, I start to feel better about me. Well, enough about that topic…for now…anyway…

My Mother of the Groom Dress wish list:

• The dress I choose must be soft looking and have a jacket to cover my upper arms. I guess it comes with age and not exercising like I should. Perhaps that could be the reason why so many Mother of the Groom and Bride dresses come with jackets? 
• The color needs to be in a shade of blue that won’t clash with Marine Blue.
• The dress should be tea length, keeping in the style of the bridesmaids dresses.
• It also has to be flattering to my stomach, hips, and derriere.

I had planned on searching every bridal department and shop within 25 miles from home. And, I thought it would take me until next April to find THE dress.

Well, I think I found it and I wasn’t even trying.  Here’s how it happened:

A couple of weeks ago, the bride-to-be and I were shopping in Boscov’s at a nearby mall. She was looking for a sundress to wear for their engagement/save-the-date pictures and I was just browsing through the evening wear, not expecting to find anything I liked. 

While the bride-to-be was trying her dresses on, I browsed through the evening wear department. Well, there it was, hanging on the rack calling to me…”Try me on, try me on.”  The color first caught my eye…sapphire blue! As usual for me, I looked at the price tag…hmm, not bad BUT not on sale. I try not to buy when it’s not on sale. I looked again, held it up in front of the mirror, then put it back.  I walked away…then I went back, took it off the rack, and headed to the dressing room. I figured I had nothing to lose.  (note: figure, lose)

Not only the color was perfect, which would go perfectly with the bridesmaids’ marine blue dresses, it was also tea length - same as their dresses. And, of course, the dress came with a jacket but when I tried it on, I didn’t feel like I was wearing the Mother of the Bride or Groom uniform with a tailored look. What won me over about this jacket dress was that the unlined chiffon sleeves, with an angled soft ruffle on the end and the soft inverted pleats at the skirt’s hem gave it a feminine feel.  The lined chiffon dress has some delicate beading on the jacket and just above the pleats which gives it a more formal look. It will be perfect for the end of May wedding!

The price was right, less than I had expected to spend. Remember I said earlier that I figured didn’t have anything to lose? Well I was wrong. The dress satisfied everything on my wish list, except it was too tight and not flattering to the above mentioned body parts in my wish list. 

So now I’m very much motivated to lose those pounds and inches. Even if my Mother of the Groom dress needs altering (if too big after all those pounds I’ll lose), I’d still be spending less than I had expected.  After I got home, I looked on Boscov’s website. My dress wasn’t shown but others were. If you don’t find what you see on a store’s website, make a visit to the store.

Now you might be thinking…What if it does’t fit this Mother of the Groom in May of 2009?  I was told by the salesperson that Boscov’s will allow me to return the dress as long as I have a receipt and the tags are still on - with no time limitation!  So, in the meantime, I’ll be exercising and watching what I eat. But it won’t be for the dress, it will be for me.

Oh, by the way, the bride-to-be approved!

1) Measure the center back seam of train from the waistline seam to the floor, as indicated by red tape measure. Measure this distance from the edge of train, as indicated by blue tape measure; mark with pin.

2) Lift the center back seam at pin mark to waistline at center back. Adjust the fold so train is 1/2″ to 3/4″ (1.3 to 2 cm) off the floor; pin to waistline seam as shown.

3) Fold and pin train at each side back seam, so sides of the train are off the floor 1/2″ to 3/4″ (1.3 to 2 cm). Continue to fold and pin train as necessary between seams, to lift remaining train off the floor.

4) Check the drape of the train; if train is long or fabric is heavy, distribute each fold into two smaller folds. Each additional fold will require a bustle button or hook. Release bustle, pin-marking points on train and waistline.

5) Attach bustle buttons or hooks at waistline markings, stitching securely; to reinforce area, place small piece of interfacing under button or hook.

6) Thread needle with strong thread; knot ends together. Place small piece of interfacing on wrong side of train at marking for button loop. Insert needle at marking, next to seam-line, through interfacing and train.

7) Take a small backstitch from the right side of the train; pull thread, leaving 1″ to 2″ (2.5 to 5 cm) loop.

Insert fingers through the loop, and grasp thread as shown.

9) Pull the thread, tightening first loop and forming a second loop. Repeat, making a thread chain long enough to form a thread loop for fastening bustle button or hook.

10) Secure the chain by inserting the needle and thread through the last loop.

11) Insert needle to underside of the train, forming thread loop on right side, parallel to seam; secure thread on underside with several backstitches.

12) Hand-stitch lace applique’s in place, if desired, to conceal the bustle buttons or hooks. Bustle the train by fatsening loops to buttons or hooks. Adjust foldsof fabric for desired look.

6) Insert ribbon ties through corresponding loops, and secure with a double bow. Adjust folds of fabric for desired look.

The best planning you can do is to have your maid of honor watch the bustle demonstration while one bridesmaid makes a video and one or two write down the instructions of how to bustle your wedding gown. If some of your bridesmaids can’t be at the final fitting, upload your video to YouTube so they can learn how to bustle your wedding dress, too.

Before your wedding day, preferably the day you have your hair done for a pre-wedding trial, get together with your bridesmaids and maid of honor to practice bustling your wedding dress. By practicing your wedding dress bustle, you can also see how your headpiece and jewelry look with your wedding gown. You could also plan to have your make-up done on the same day…only be sure to step into your gown so that it doesn’t rub off on your gown!

The View From Behind - Your Bustle

One of the features that makes a wedding gown feel extra special is the train. A bride will feel very grand walking down the aisle with her beautiful train sweeping gracefully behind her. After the ceremony, though, you will definitely need a way to get the train out of your way for walking around and dancing. This is the job of the bustle.

There are almost as many bustle styles as there are types of gowns. Different trains will call for different techniques. It is very important that the gown looks as beautiful bustled as it does with the train down, so have your seamstress show you different choices if the first attempt at creating a bustle looks awkward (or if it makes your tush look huge!).

One of the simplest bustle options is to pick the train up and secure it to the outside of the gown towards the bottom of the skirt. This works particularly well for little sweep trains. Usually one fastener will suffice to get the entirety of a petite train off the floor. It is prettiest if the bustle fastener is decorative or discreet, as it will be visible on the outside of the gown when the train is lowered. A tiny hook with a thread eye can be a good choice for a lightweight train. A very attractive fastener is a handmade toggle system. It should coordinate with the rest of your ensemble, so is you are wearing pearl bridal jewelry, have a tiny loop of pearls through which the little bar will slide.

Bigger trains call for more elaborate bustles. One that works well with most medium length trains is the French bustle. In this system, the train is pulled up underneath the skirt of the gown, creating a pretty pouf effect (it should be done fairly low on the skirt, so that a big mound of fabric is not created over the derriere - around knee height is usually perfect). A French bustle is usually designed with a series of fabric ties, with one set higher and one set lower on the inside of the gown’s skirt. When the strings are tied together, the train is formed into the bustle.

Matching up all those little ties can be a nightmare for the person assigned to the task. To prevent confusion and frustration on the day of the wedding, the bustler should attend one of the bride’s final gown fittings to get a lesson from the seamstress. A great way to make the process more clear is to color code the pair of ribbons, so it is easy to tell which ones to tie together. A beautiful way to do this is with organza ribbons (which tie nicely and do not slip). Add little fabric flowers to the ends of each tie, then all your attendant has to do is match up the flowers, and presto - bustling made easy. A great alternative to the flowers is to code the pairs of ties with little crystals or pearls (once again, match them up to the bride’s crystal or pearl bridal jewelry). It makes the bustle both pretty and easy - a win-win situation.

There are certain types of fuller trains which need to be bustled to the outside of the gown. This can be the case with stiffer fabrics that do not drape softly into a pretty French bustle. In that situation, you can bustle the train up near the waistline of the dress using tiny hooks and thread eyes. This works best on gowns that have some sort of waist detail that can be used to hide the hooks before they are used. Avoid an external bustle to the waistline of a princess seam gown (which has panels that flow all the way down the gown instead of a defined waist), as it would ruin the line of the dress.

One last tip on bustling: the back of your gown should be completely off the ground when bustled. If a small amount of the train drags behind you, you will be stepping backwards onto it all night, and it is likely to get torn. A good way to be certain that you will achieve the desired effect is to have the seamstress pin up your bustle when she is hemming the front of the gown. Depending on your height, she may need to shave off a little sliver of the train length, but it will completely worth it to achieve a perfect bustle. Then you will be free to dance until dawn and really have fun at your reception.

How to Decorate a Beach Wedding

When you are planning your beach wedding it is a good idea to think about the weather as this will effect all your plans on how you decorate. It doesn’t matter that it is raining or windy as long as you are ready!

You will want to have a designated area for your guests and yourselves as you may find that the sand will be too soft to have lots of chairs. For older guests you may want to provide deck chairs and for very young guests blankets for them to sit on. If you have guests in wheelchairs or with buggies then have matting down so that they can join in the celebrations.

You could use shells to mark an aisle in the sand and brighten them up with flowers - make sure you push the stems in so that they don’t blow away. If your ceremony is at dusk then you could mark the aisle with tiki torches or provide guests with lanterns to hold.

If you think that it might rain or it will be very hot you could provide your guests with your wedding color umbrellas and these could be used as your wedding favor as well. Check out ebay and overstock, plus your local dollar stores to find a bargain on the umbrellas. You could then have those little drinks umbrellas in the reception drink to add to the theme!

Covering the area with a wedding tent is a good idea but check with the beach authorities as to whether you would be allowed to have a wedding tent on the beach, some don’t.

If you know a local sand sculptor or local art student why not ask if they are able to design something for the ceremony - this may cost more than you want to spend but a definite wow factor and they last for ages. If you haven’t seen one before you will be amazed. You could recreate a fairy castle, a speed boat and even a vintage car - there really is no limit. If you have lots of children attending the ceremony you could provide them with a bucket and spade so that they can have a go themselves, this is a real help to the parents so that they don’t get bored.

Remember to add your beach theme to your wedding invites so that your guests dress appropriately!

Beach wedding colors taken from nature are green, cornflower, aqua, and marine blue, orange, fuchsia, plus black and white accented with summery colors such as yellow or pink, Aqua Blue, and the lighter purples, like orchid and lavender.

For more daring brides, contrasting color combinations may include orange and fuchsia, green and hot pink, navy or black against any kind of eye-popping-color, and chocolate brown and pink or aqua.

For the more subdued, conservative bride, use of a monochromatic color palate may be more to your liking. Monochromatic appears to be the 2008 color trend for weddings. To use a monochromatic theme, select a chocolate brown, tie in the color of the sand, and add a gold for a sophisticated look. Or pair the chocolate brown with yellow and orange to give a more tropical feeling to your NJ beach wedding.

Beach wedding color schemes are mostly drawn from nature. For inspiration, look at summer travel photos, take a walk along the water and through summer gardens, visit an art gallery displaying summer themed paintings, or visit your local paint store for color scheme ideas.
